I've gone on over thirty backpacking trips in the Weminuche Wilderness of southwestern Colorado. My novels Bearstone and Beardance take place there along the Continental Divide. I like to go out for a week at a time, visiting the high lakes and streams. Everything I need for a week is on my back, from my tent to three meals a day. My nieces and nephews have gone on quite a few of these trips with me, and of course, Jean loves hiking in these mountains.

My backpack is like an old friend. We've been hiking together for thirty years now. We've gone a lot of places that horses could never reach. It offers me the satisfaction of cruising to amazing places on my own two feet.
